If you’ve been using peptides for recovery, performance, or longevity, the last year (and especially the last month) has probably felt confusing.

You might:

  • Get some medications through a clinic or pharmacy.
  • Also order certain peptides online because they simply aren’t available through legitimate medical channels.
  • Now see that one of the biggest “research” vendors, Peptide Sciences, has suddenly shut down – and you’re wondering what to do next.

As a wellness‑focused longevity MD who uses peptides when appropriate, my goal here is not to scold anyone. Patients turned to online sources for understandable reasons:

  • Many peptides that helped them feel better became very hard or impossible to get through normal pharmacies after FDA rule changes.
  • People heard about benefits on podcasts and in communities long before the regulatory and medical systems caught up.
  • Even now, some peptides Secretary Kennedy discussed recently on Joe Rogan’s podcast remain in a grey area: promising, but not yet available in a clean, legal way for everyday clinical use.

You deserve clear information, not guilt. Let’s talk about what’s changing, what the real risks are, and how to move toward safer, physician‑guided and pharmacy-provided options without throwing away everything you’ve learned about your own body.

How We Got Here: Why Patients Went Online

For several years, many clinicians prescribed compounded peptides through reputable 503A/503B pharmacies. Patients saw improvements in:

  • Joint pain and recovery
  • Sleep, body composition, and appetite
  • Energy and overall well‑being

Then, between 2023 and 2025, several things happened:

  • The FDA moved many well‑known peptides (like BPC‑157, GHRP‑2/6, CJC‑1295 and others) into categories that cannot be legally compounded for human use, except in very narrow circumstances.
  • Multiple warning letters targeted online sellers and some telehealth platforms, especially around GLP‑1‑type peptides and injectable “research chemicals” that were clearly being used by people, not just labs.

Patients didn’t stop needing help just because the rules changed. In February 2026, on Joe Rogan’s podcast (#2461), Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. essentially said:

  • A lot of people feel they’ve been helped by certain peptides (himself included).
  • When the system shuts down legitimate compounding without offering a realistic alternative, people naturally go underground.
  • He wants to bring about 14 of those restricted peptides back into a regulated compounding pathway so they can be used openly, under medical supervision.

Whether you agree with all of his politics or not, that description matches what I see in practice: people went online because the “official” system didn’t give them another route.

What Peptide Sciences’ Shutdown Really Means

Peptide Sciences was one of the largest U.S. vendors selling peptides labeled “for research use only” to tens of thousands of customers. In March 2026, they:

  • Posted a notice that they were voluntarily ceasing operations,
  • Took down their catalog,
  • Stopped accepting orders,
  • And were flagged by independent testing platforms like Finnrick as fully shut down, with a warning that any site still claiming to sell “Peptide Sciences” products is likely fraudulent.

Important points:

  • This doesn’t mean peptides “don’t work.” Many of the molecules they sold have real biological activity; some are being studied seriously, some already inspired approved drugs like GLP‑1 agonists.
  • It does mean the grey‑market business model is under heavy pressure from regulators and quality concerns. Independent testing found substantial variability in some products (e.g., retatrutide samples scoring poorly for purity and content).

If you’ve used Peptide Sciences or similar vendors, you are not alone and you are not “bad.” You made decisions in a messy environment. The question now is how to navigate the next phase more safely.

The Real‑World Risks (Without Shame)

Using grey‑market peptides carries some risks that are worth understanding—again, not to judge past decisions, but to inform smarter choices going forward.

  1. Quality is unknown and can vary
    • Independent testing of multiple vendors has shown that some vials contain less active peptide than labeled, more than labeled, or detectable impurities.
    • That can mean doses that are too weak to help, or high enough to increase side‑effect risk.
  1. Contamination and sterility
    • FDA warning letters to online sellers have emphasized that unapproved injectables may be contaminated or contain completely different ingredients.
    • Unlike FDA‑approved injectables, you don’t get validated sterility and stability data.
  1. No structured medical monitoring
    • Most people using research‑grade peptides do so without baseline labs or a monitoring plan.
    • This makes it harder to catch subtle issues with blood sugar, lipids, liver/kidney function, blood counts, or hormone levels early.
  1. Legal and practical gaps if something goes wrong
    • If you have a serious reaction, the vendor is often overseas, anonymous, or gone (as with Peptide Sciences).
    • Your regular clinicians may not know exactly what you took or how to manage complications.

None of this erases the fact that some patients genuinely felt better on certain peptides. It just means the path you used to access them has become more fragile and, in some cases, more risky.

What Secretary Kennedy. and Others Are Trying to Change

Secretary Kennedy, has publicly said he plans to:

  • Reverse a key FDA decision that restricted nearly two dozen peptides from compounding,
  • And bring roughly 14 peptides back onto an allowed list so legitimate compounders can prepare them again under prescription.

Scientists like Matt Kaeberlein have pointed out that:

  • The FDA wasn’t claiming these peptides are proven dangerous; in many cases, it said there was limited safety data for the specific routes and uses being proposed.
  • A better answer than a pure ban is to fund rigorous clinical trials and create a regulated access pathway.

If those regulatory changes go through, some of the peptides you’ve been sourcing online may become available again—this time via pharmacies that follow quality standards, and through physicians who can help monitor you.

We’re not there yet, but we might be moving toward a more rational system.

If You’ve Used (or Are Using) Research Peptides: How to Move Forward

Here’s how I suggest approaching this as your doctor, assuming you’ve used sites like Peptide Sciences or are considering other vendors.

1. Be completely honest with your clinician

You will get better care if you can say:

  • “I’ve used BPC‑157/TB‑500/MK‑677/etc. from online sources.”
  • “These are the doses and how long I took them.”
  • “These are the benefits and side effects I noticed.”

My job is to keep you safe and help you make good decisions with the information we have.

2. Get baseline labs and a check‑in

Even if you feel fine, it’s worth:

  • Running labs (metabolic panel, lipids, CBC, HbA1c, IGF‑1 or other hormone markers as appropriate).
  • Reviewing any injection site issues or new symptoms since starting peptides.

This helps us catch anything early and gives us a starting line if we consider future treatments.

3. Distinguish between what can be done legitimately and what currently can’t

Together we can:

  • Identify which goals you were trying to achieve (joint healing, appetite control, fat loss, sleep, performance).
  • Map those goals to:
    • FDA‑approved medications (e.g., GLP‑1 agonists from pharmacies for weight loss/diabetes),
    • Lifestyle and non‑peptide options,
    • And, if regulations change, a shortlist of peptides that may re‑enter legal compounding.

There may be some peptides I simply cannot legally prescribe today. I’ll be transparent about that so you’re not left guessing.

4. If you decide to continue any experimental peptide use

I can’t endorse unapproved vendors, but I can:

  • Explain potential mechanisms and known risks.
  • Help you understand what red‑flag symptoms should prompt immediate medical attention.
  • Suggest reasonable intervals for labs and check‑ins, so we’re not flying completely blind, even if the source is outside the medical system.

Long‑term, my hope—and Secretary Kennedy’s stated goal—is that many of these conversations move back into a regulated, supervised space, so you don’t have to choose between feeling better and following the rules.

Practical Steps If You Have Peptide Sciences Vials in Your Fridge

If you still have Peptide Sciences products at home:

  • Understand that the company has voluntarily shut down, and independent testing platforms now warn that any future products advertised under that name are likely counterfeit or misrepresented.
  • If you and your physician decide to stop, we can focus on other therapies and support your health in different ways.
  • If you’re reluctant to throw them out, talk openly with your clinician about what those vials are, how long they’ve been stored, and what alternatives exist.

Again, this is all about making the best choice with the best information available right now.

Final Thoughts

  • You are not wrong or irresponsible for exploring peptides when you were in pain, fatigued, or trying to optimize your health in a system that often moves slowly.
  • The landscape is changing: FDA enforcement, Peptide Sciences’ shutdown, and upcoming policy shifts around roughly 14 peptides are all signs that the “old way” of doing this is in flux.
  • My commitment, whether you are an existing patient of mine or a future new patient, is to:
    • respect the real benefits some of you have experienced,
    • be honest about what I can and cannot prescribe,
    • help you transition as much as possible to pharmacy‑supplied, monitored treatments,
    • and stay on top of regulatory changes so we can move promising peptides back into the light as soon as it’s legally and medically appropriate.

If you’re using or have used online peptides and want to talk through your specific situation, bring everything—names, doses, websites, and your questions—to your next visit. We’ll work through it together, without judgment.
